Doggie Coats and Clothes to Make for your Pet

Want to make a fleece sweater for your medium sized dog?  Here’s the link for one, although I cannot access their main page.  The author states that these fleece sweaters do not work well on larger dogs.  If you lean towards knitted dog jackets, follow the link using those words.  This is a cute looking little coat.   How to Make a Dog Jacket by E-how is another good set of instructions.  Another site that I found instructions for doggy wear is at MarthaStewart dot com.   Make a cardigan dog coat there.  These links will get you going on your way to making your pet a nice warm coat for winter.  So many short-haired dogs can’t take the cold weather and these will need some kind of winter protection.

The Funny Things that Dogs Do

My family has two dogs.  One is full blooded dachshund and the other is 3/4 dachshund although she doesn’t appear to be except by coloration.  She’s 4 now and he is 8.  Something she’s started doing is sitting next to me when I am at my computer and snapping her jaws.  I know she’s doing it to get attention, but I wonder if she’s trying to tell me that she needs to go outside too.  And sometimes when we are sitting out on the porch I hear her trying to “talk” and swear it sounds like Mama.  She’s never done that before so it’s especially curious.  Of course the two of them stay under me all day when I am home; which is most of the time.  We have to keep the bathroom door shut because they like to get into the garbage in there; and sometimes the girl will get onto our table in search of food.  She steals my gum too.  The last two times I had a box of liver snap treats on the table, she got up and got it while I was gone and of course it was empty when I got back.  Sometimes they mess with the garbage can but luckily not that often.

Treating Your Dog for Fleas

Did you know that some dogs are highly allergic to fleas?  We got a dachshund last May who had a lot of hair missing on his hindquarters and we were told that almost his entire back had been hairless.  The previous owner attributed it to an allergy to gas heat.  Yeah, right.  I took him to my vet immediately and he told me that the dog was allergic to fleas so that he was constantly scratching and biting himself, which led to the hair loss.  We started him on Frontline immediately and within the first month that he was with us his hair all grew back.  He wasn’t scratching and biting himself any more.  Anytime I see him scratching now I check to see if a month has gone by so that I can retreat with Frontline.  This is a liquid that you put on the back of the neck where they can’t reach to lick off.  It is waterproof so bathing won’t remove it, although it probably would be wise to wait two or three days before bathing.  This remedy kills fleas and ticks within 18 hours of being applied.  In fact, I’ve seen dogs on the TV shows about animal cops where a dog was infested with fleas.  They applied the Frontline and you could watch the fleas falling off, literally.  I know that my mouth was falling open.  It was really disgusting that the poor dog had been allowed to get into that condition.  You can order pet supplies at 1-800-Pet-Meds and these will be delivered right to your door.  You can’t ask for more.

Sweet Newborn Puppies

Dachshund Puppies Born 03/25/09

Dachshund Puppies Born 03/25/09

Here are seven dachshund puppies born 03/25/09, one day before my husband’s birthday.  What a gift!  There are three black and tan, one chocolate, one tan and two blue dapples.  The mother is a black and tan and the father is a red dapple.  What joy, seven puppies in our small apartment.  The worst part is that we are only supposed to have two but I hate to get rid of any of my puppies.  They are squealers and sometimes sound like a human baby.  We can’t wait until they open their eyes and start running around or start developing their faces and their ears.  I can’t wait!

Lookie Lookie

I thought that it was time to change the look on all of my blogs.  They were starting to be same-o same-o, so I found others that I liked.    I especially like this little puppy dog but I might trade it for a picture of one or both of my little dogs.  Now that would be really cute.

Neutering Your Male Dog Will Stop Marking

After our daughter moved out she began to notice that our house smelled like dog urine.  When you are in the house all of the time you just do not notice the smell.  Now I feel like I am smelling this at our new place and I do not like it for now I have to clean the carpet.  I’ve read that male dogs will mark or pee on areas inside the home in order to claim the territory and this is due to their male instinct.  But once the dog is neutered they should stop this behavior.  It does not happen right away but when it does they will stop marking.  I’m ready to get mine fixed.  I also am hoping that doing this will help him not to be tormented when our female comes into heat; although I am considering doing the same thing for her.  The vet said that a heat puts stress on a bitch so having this done will help her physical condition.  It’s something to think about.

Social Networking for Pets

I am a member of Zootoo.com which is a social networking web site for animals and animal lovers.  This is a place for pets and their owners, as well as a place you can connect to others with funny stories, videos and questions, or where you could find a pet to adopt.  Zootoo recently held a competition for dog shelters, the winner of which was awarded quite a lot of money.  My local shelter was in the top 20 but did not win.  They do however need extra money so that they can update their shelter.  Their vet operates in a small trailer there and the three different buildings that dogs are kept in are open to the elements and cold in the winters.  Zootoo is a fine place to visit and join and their main goal is to help animals.  All donations to them will be used for the upkeep of adoptable pets.  Please be sure to drop by their site and look around.  Join Zootoo and you will find a place of fun and relaxation.

Odie the Camera Shy Dachshund

Odie June 6, 2008Shy Odie runs every single time he sees a camera – without fail.  I don’t understand why he is so camera shy, but all joking aside, he actually runs and hides under our bed every single time I drag out my camera.  This time my husband turned him around like this and held him so that I could get this shot of him.

Odie was given to us by the sister of a lady who no longer wanted him.  He had a lot of hair loss across his back which ended up being due to him being allergic to fleas.  He would bite it until the hair fell out.  Luckily for him it is growing back.  The hair under his chest hasn’t and maybe never will come back.  Likewise he has a bare spot under his neck.

Odie has suffered an injury to his upper back, or his spine, so that all of the signals from his brain do not quite make it all the way to his hind legs.  This does not keep Odie down though.  He runs and walks right along with our other dachshund.  In the grass when he runs, he hops like a bunny.  Since we have had him, his walking has improved and his hind legs appear stronger.  Instead of walking on his ankles, he is walking on his feet.  He eats well and is well loved on by all seven of us in the house.  He no longer thinks he has to stay out doors and sometimes does not want to go outside.

I noticed yesterday during our walk that he started walking with his right hind leg a little loose so I picked him up and carried him a lot of the way back to the house.  Then he went to bed early and when he walked later that night, he moved from side to side, so I figured either he was feeling stiff or his back might be hurting.  Either way, we don’t push him to do things and we are always aware of him and his disability.  We keep our eyes on his back legs and make sure that nobody steps on him or trips over him.  Odie is six years old and although I do not know what kind of life he had before coming to us, I and my family are determined that he will live out his years in peace and happiness.  With lots of love.

Don’t FIX my dogs, they aren’t broken!!!

I love my dogs, and they are lying on the bed next to me so I am going to talk about them.  Every time I take my dogs to the Vet, he encourages me to have them spayed/neutered.  Neither dog is.  I made an appointment with the Humane people to have my female done but then fate intervened and I ended up going out of state.  I have yet to reschedule and they have yet to return my money.  Every time I think about doing it, it bothers me.   To me it is needless to let my dog be cut open and take the risk of losing her.  Being cut open is about the worst violation there is and she has no voice to speak out against it.  It is my belief that every living creature has the right to be alive and to procreate.  We can prevent the procreation in our dogs by not allowing them to be around the opposite sex during their heats.  No surgery needed for that.  As far as some numbskull might bring up procreation in bugs and such, well that’s another story.  When I say living creatures, I do not include bugs, snakes and the like.  Yech.

I have a male dachshund and a female mixed dachshund, neither of whom are “fixed”.  She has yet to come into heat since he has been around but I am not worried about her taking because he has a back injury and this injury affects his two back legs.  It is difficult for him to balance or stand on his back legs and that is required for him to be able to mate.  In the offchance that it does happen, I will greet the new arrivals with love and will probably keep at least two, and find homes for the rest, all not fixed.

The Humane Society and animal rescue groups don’t like me because I won’t “fix” my animals.  It isn’t that I want puppies but that I don’t want to have my dogs cut open and “fixed”.  Seems odd that they can’t come up with dog birth control which would surely be much cheaper than surgery, and less permanent.  We could have those little implants put in and then removed if we wanted puppies. Yeah, I’d buy that.

Dog Biscuits #2

1 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup liver powder (available at
health food stores)
2 tablespoons brewer’s yeast powder
1/4 cup bone meal powder
3 tablespoons powdered milk
2 eggs, lightly beaten
3 tablespoons wheat germ oil (you may substitute bacon drippings)
1/2 cup water
This healthy and economical treat is reserved for your four-legged friends only!Your dog will thank you if you make a double batch.

Preheat the oven to 325°F.

In a large bowl or in the food processor, combine the flour, oatmeal, cornmeal, liver powder, brewer’s yeast, bone meal, and powdered milk (may also add beef or chicken bouillon cubes).

Stir in the eggs, oil, and water and mix thoroughly.

The dough will be very stiff and dry (much like dog biscuits!)

Remove the dough to a lightly floured surface or pastry cloth.

Roll or pat it into a rectangle 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.

Cut into bone-shaped biscuits with a small knife, or use a bone-shaped cookie cutter.

Re-roll the leftover scraps of dough and cut into shapes until all the dough is used.

Place on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake for 40 to 50 minutes until brown and dried through.

Cool on a rack.

Yield: About 12 large bones or 24 small ones.
