Our dogs are driving us crazy!

We have a female mixed dachshund and a male full-blooded dachshund, neither of which have been ‘fixed’.  Now the female is in her heat cycle and with the male around it is a daily, all-day event where he tries to mate with her.  He can’t do it but he sure tries.  Any time that she is on the floor at his level, he jumps on her and goes to town.  The funny thing is that sometimes he is not even near the mark.  He fails and then she will jump on top of him and do it to him, as if she is trying to teach him how to do it.  She gets back down and then he tries again.  It was funny to begin with but not anymore.  The kids all laugh if they even bother to notice, but he whines if she gets on our bed and he can’t reach her.  If we put them in separate rooms the male will whine to get out.  If she is in a room and he isn’t, he will sit at the door of the room she is in and whine.  It’s hard to get any sleep like this.

The male suffered some kind of injury to his back according to our vet, and the brain signals don’t quite make it to his back legs.  He could barely walk at all when we got him but he has really improved a lot with our daily walks.  Still, he can’t stand on his back legs for long.  And when he gets off of her, his back end will often keep on going, as if the signals were simply delayed and don’t know when to stop.  Its funny but it is also sad.  We did not get him for stud duties and I suspected that he would be unable to mate.  This is okay with us for we weren’t that interested in another litter anyway.  I just feel sorry for him because he keeps on trying and failing.
